Mainau Island

From Fussen we will take a one-day trip to Mainau Island located on the Constance Lake, not far from the city of Konstanz.  In the past, the island belonged to the Teutonic Knights and in 1853 it was bought by the Duke Frederick the First who left the island as an inheritance to his son, Frederick the Second. Today it belongs to the Lennart Bernadell Foundation.

The island is considered a natural treasure. It includes an amazing park with brightly colored flowers (a variety of over 20,000 roses of 1,200 different kinds) and it also includes tropical plants. May is the month of Rhododendron, at this time of the year, almost 300 varieties make up a magnificent display of blossoms amongst masses of tulips and roses. Between Spring and Summer visitors can discover a magnificent ocean of blossoms covering an area of more than 3000m2 .

There is even a Butterfly House and garden, considered to be a true Eldorado of those who love Butterflies. More than a thousand exotic butterflies dance between flowers, leaves and watercourses in the glass house.
