Herrenchiemsee Castle

In the journey back to Munich, we will take a 30 minute ferry trip to  have our last experience visiting the Herrenchiemsee Castel, a replica of the Versailles. This palace was built as a "Temple of Fame" for King Louis XIV of France, whom the Bavarian monarch fervently admired. The palace is situated on the island of Herren on the lake of Chiemsee, which is the largest lake in Southern Germany.

The King Ludwig considered himself as being the successor of the Sun King- Louis XIV, and he built the castle in a sense of monument to his adoration, Louis XIV. The highlights of the large state rooms are the State Staircase, the State Bedroom and the Great Hall of Mirrors. The king's own rooms were in the intimate Small Apartment, designed in the French rococo style.

The most famous part of the palace is the Hall of Mirrors. It is 98 meters long and reflects the light of the  44 candelabras and 33 chandeliers. Gilt work is everywhere in the palace. The palace is surrounded by extensive park and woodland with ornate fountains and gardens.
