City of Munich

We will start our adventure with a sightseeing trip through Munich, the third largest city in Germany.  Munich lies on the Isar River, north of the Alps and is an attractive cultural, historical and economic town. The trademark of the city is the famous BMW plant and headquarters.

 Henry the Lion founded Munich in 1158 and in 1255 the city became the capital of Upper Bavaria. Throughout history, the city experienced several disasters and fires that partially  destroyed it.. During the Second World War, Munich was the target of several air raids of the Allied Forces, being almost completely destroyed  but it was rebuilt after the war. The historical sights were restored   and became important attractions in the city.

 Marienplatz

 

We will start the tour downtown Munich in Marienplatz, a large open square full of historic monuments, famous for its Town hall (Rathaus in German) and for the Gloken spiel clock featuring human size figurines showing medieval scenes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cathedral of our Lady (Frauenkirche)

Built in gothic style, the church was started in 1468 and finished in 1488. It’s considered the largest church in southern Germany, its towers measure 325 feet. During World War II it was almost entirely damages but was entirely restored both inside and outside.

Residenz and the National Theater

 

This is where several of Wagner’s pieces and operas   premiered. Mozart himself had the opening of his piece Idomeneo in this theater.

Konigsplatz

Also known as the “Athens of the Isar”, Konigsplatz is an elegant square conceived by King Louis I contains three emblematic buildings:

 

 

 

 

 

Propylaen/Proplaea– which reproduces the Doric style of classical Greece. It was built following the model of the Acropolis in Athens.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

State Collection of Ancient Art– was built in the Corinthian style. It features a collection of pieces of enormous historical value due to their remote origins.

Maximilianeum

Built in the mid-19th century  by order of King Maximillian (it is now the Bavarian Parliament)

Built in the honor of the Virgin Mary as a sign of gratitude at the end of the Great Plague.

Nymphemburg castle situated  in a midst of a lovely park in the west part of the city. Was built between 1664 and 1667after which successors of Ferdinand Mary added new pavilions of the original building. The Great Room is one of the most beautiful room is in the castle. The Porcelain Museum, exhibiting works produced at the factory in Nymphemburg itself, is another interesting feature inside the castle. Finally, the Garden , a place where you canfind inspiration and relaxation

Glyptothek/Sculpture Gallery– built in the Ionic style. Contains a large Collection of Sculptures of  Classical Greece.

 

Built on the Island on the Isar river, represents the most famous place dedicated to science. Opened in 1925, occupying  a surface of 45,000m2, the museum contains over 17,000 pieces distributed into sections such as those on mining, navigation, the railways, aeronautics, astronomy, chemistry, engineering, and astronautics.
