Just two miles form the city of Fussen we will leave Germany and enter Austria. After crossing the Alps and admiring its snowy ridges, we will reach Innsbruck, the capital of the county of Tyrol. Innsbruck became the capital city in 1429 but has been also known as a winter sports capital of Austria. We will stop here for one day to explore the city’s history and culture. Though a small town, there are many things waiting to be discovered. First we will see Golden Roof, the theater and also the Anta Anna Column (Annasaule in German) built in 1703 to celebrate the withdrawal of the Bavarian troops. The most famous attraction is the Ambras Castle. Built in 1593 by Duke Ferdinand the Second , the son of Ferdinand the First, the castle has an impressive collection of Middle Eastern armor and weapons but also a collection of paintings. The castle hosts three hundred paintings made throughout the centuries for the members of the Habsburg empireal family. We’ll end our visit with a stroll in the park of the castle where exotics peacocks will remind you of the luxury of a royal court. |
